Oriental tattoos are widely known for their elegant and sophisticated styles. These designs are often intricate and colorful, and can represent anything from strength to nothing more than a simple aesthetic appeal.
Some of the most popular and recognizable Oriental tattoos feature things such as dragons and koi fish, warriors and geisha. Dragons are frequently done in a style similar to statuary; they are placed in an immobile stance, seemingly struck in mid-flight, tail rippling, jaws wide open. They are regularly seen in reds and golds, black, jade green and sometimes even purple; while koi fish are almost invariably done in a bright orange, and are often seen fighting their way up a wild stream. Most warriors and geisha are done in a traditional wood block style; the warriors are seen either swiping their swords through the air, or in battle with each other. Geishas, on the other hand, are often shown in a classic setting; dancing, sitting with crossed legs and a shamisen in her lap, and occasionally even seductively lowering the robe from around her shoulders.
Flowers and plant life are also quite popular in Oriental tattoos. White lotus blossoms are favored; however, it is not uncommon to see bolder colored blooms. Large sprays of wisteria; a long, arching stalk of phalenopsis orchids, with delicate white flowers and dark pink centers, and weeping cherry blossom trees are also quite common for Oriental tattoos. For an interesting variation on the classic flower motif, you could create a silhouette style with contrasting white cut into black, or black cut into white. In this style you could also add small birds on the branches of trees, or emerging from a small bush filled with flowers.
Patterns, either in the background or unto themselves, may also be used for Oriental tattoos. These designs feature stark geometrical patterns with consistent symmetry. They are often simple spiraling circles, or blocks of color; however, they can consist of anything from precisely arranged fans, seemingly disarrayed leaves and butterflies, or a mixture of shapes, plant life, water, animals and sometimes even buildings. Occasionally these patterns can be used to create a larger scene. For instance, the spiral shapes can be used as a cloudy sky, or tempestuous ocean; while the blocks of color can create buildings, bicycles, trees or mountains. You can also add full, slick lines to create people and animals to add to your scene.
